Aret Gicir, an Istanbul born Armenian artist. Combining the figurative with the abstract, Aret Gicir’s paintings to date have pursued the themes of collective pain, transmission of genocidal memory and affective states of denial at the intersections of Europe, Turkey and Anatolia. In abstract expressionist style, portraits of political figures emerge alongside barren landscapes, insisting on bearing witness while at the same time revealing the difficulties of acts of witnessing both in relation to the past and in the grey interstices of the present.
